CyrusOne, a US data center operator, has formed a strategic partnership with Kansai Electric Power Company, Inc. (KEPCO), a Japanese energy firm, to establish new data centers throughout Japan. The joint venture, known as CyrusOne KEP, will operate on a 50:50 basis and plans to invest at least one trillion yen ($7 billion) over the next decade. The goal is to develop a business scale of 900 megawatts (MW) by constructing data centers in the Kansai and Tokyo regions, as well as other major markets across Japan. The construction of the first facility is set to commence soon in the Kansai area, which includes Nara, Wakayama, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo, and Shiga prefectures. While specific details were not disclosed, this collaboration combines data center expertise with power knowledge, creating an opportunity to optimize both digital and power infrastructure. The Japanese hyperscale data center market is experiencing growth due to the rising volume of data traffic driven by the expansion of digital technology products and services that enhance productivity, entertainment, and security. Through this partnership, the KEPCO Group aims to deliver world-class services to cloud companies and technology organizations in Japan.
